This paper addresses the concern that high penetration of fluctuating renewable power generation on medium voltage (MV) feeders could adversely affect the voltage profile during the daily load cycle, and could produce fluctuating voltage variations outside of the established acceptable guidelines for flicker. The paper reviews recent utility impact studies and proceeds to show how advanced inverter controls at the generating sites can produce fast reactive power and use stored energy to mitigate voltage fluctuations.
