In recent years it has become more ‘politically correct’, and seen as less ‘sensitive’, to view inequalities in mental health care for ethnic minorities in the UK as resulting from differences in ethnicity and culture. Many see this as an insufficient framework and suggest that racism is a key issue to be explored in health inequalities. However, the issue of racism and particularly institutional racism continues to be controversial and discussion is often hampered by a lack of clarity of definitions.
