The determination of the current system which produces a given magnetic field in a region of finite extent, is considered. The magnetic field synthesis problem arisen from this, is solved by means of a global optimization method. The method is based on search trajectories. This technique utilizes the expression of the gradient of the cost functional and allows one to save calculation time when the expression of it is known. The algorithm for the solution of the problem is developed for an axisymmetric electromagnetic configuration. Two applications for the determination of the poloidal current system in toroidal devices for thermonuclear fusion experiments, are considered.
