Abstract Multiple criteria decision-making methods have been applied to solve a variety of real-world problems, one of which is the selection of conceptual design. Various generalized models are discussed, and the scoring model of the compensatory type is considered the most suitable for this application. The analytic hierarchy process and the Self-Explicated Approach, both under this model, are considered in this work. As conceptual design tends to be a fuzzy problem in nature, a fuzzy approach for the Analytic Hierarchy Process is also presented. Comparative analyses of these approaches are made with respect to a conceptual design for a proposed precision fixture.
