pedometers are gaining credibility as a reliable methodfor objectively measuring physical activity. The feedback froma pedometer is immediate and objective, providing unbiasedmeasure of physical activity to the individual. Previous researchhas shown that objective feedback has a positive effect onadherence. Other authors have suggested that a pedometermay be used as a motivational tool to enhance adherence toexercise programs. However, there is little evidence in theliterature that this possibility has been investigated and measured. This study investigated the effect of feedback from a pedometeras an intervention strategy to increase adherence to a walkingprogram. When used in a walking program that specifies a dailystep count, a pedometer offers frequent and immediatefeedback (positive and negative) on performance. Regularfeedback on performance is likely to increase the likelihood ofadherence to a walking program.
