We present optical and near-infrared observations of a nearby (∼10 pc), low-temperature M dwarf star, discovered as a by-product of the APM high-redshift quasar survey. Our infrared observations place this object, BRI0021−0214, amongst the lowest luminosity stars yet discovered, with a bolometric luminosity of ∼14th magnitude (∼10 −4 L ⊙ ) and an effective temperature of ∼2250 K
