In this edition Professor Du Bois's book has been almost entirely rewritten and much new material added. It is a remarkable book in that all the valuable literature on the subject, both scientific and clinical, is presented together with the extensive calorimetric investigation carried out under his direction in the Russell Sage Institute of Pathology in an interesting and exhaustive manner. Du Bois has succeeded in his aim "to bring basal metabolism out of the realm of pure physiology into the domain of clinical medicine" and in doing this has made the book of the greatest value to the clinician and general practitioner.
