Resumen

Introduction and Objective: The EMPoWER study is a two-site trial of a behavioral intervention delivered via a web-based app targeting family communication and diabetes management among youth (age 10-13) and parents. To support intervention access and engagement, we evaluated app onboarding process metrics between English- and Spanish-speaking families in the intervention arm. Methods: We conducted orientation sessions with 59 families (85% English-speaking; 15% Spanish-speaking; Mage=11.4±1.2 yrs; 49% male, 51% female; 25.4% Hispanic, 25.4% non-Hispanic Black, 33.9% non-Hispanic White, 15.3% other) randomized to the intervention. Metrics included orientation length, self-reported technology confidence, technology access, and frequency of technology use. Independent-samples t-tests and Fisher’s exact tests were used to explore patterns of engagement between English- and Spanish-speaking families. Results: See table. Conclusion: Longer orientation sessions, limited computer access, lower caregiver technology confidence, and lower youth frequency of technology use among Spanish-speaking families suggest that additional support may be warranted for enhanced onboarding to the intervention. Tailoring orientation procedures to families’ skills and preferences may enhance comfort and promote access and engagement of both English- and Spanish-speaking families in app-based behavioral interventions.
