Eumelanins are deep black, polyphenolic polymers obtained from Dopa 1 or dopamine 2 and containing indole or dihydroindole units, respectively. They are formed by intramolecular addition of the amino groups to the o-quinones generated by oxidation. The results of solid-state 13C NMR spectroscopy confirm the suggested route of formation of eumelanins.
