The development of the “Silk Road” themed exhibition(s) in Henan Province have evolved from “national mission with local coordination” approach to “local distinctiveness”. During the 1990s, influenced by the grand narrative of the exhibition theme, local identity of Henan Province was downplayed, failing to showcase its significance as a vital junction along the Silk Road and its cultural depth. Subsequently, with the transformation of the themes and narrative strategy, the Silk Road themed exhibition has achieved a localized expression of Silk Road culture and is becoming an important carrier for promoting the local image of Henan and enhancing cultural identity, providing a platform to advance cultural exchanges between Henan and regions along the Belt and Road Initiative.
