Implications of internet-information dependencies amidst security-threatening misinformation and disinformation practices

Abstract Contemporary communication is deeply influenced by digital technologies, which have transformed the way individuals and organizations interact. These technologies enable extensive interconnectivity through globally hosted servers, creating a seamless network that supports instant information exchange. As a result, communication is no longer confined by geographical boundaries, allowing ideas, messages, and data to flow across continents in real time. However, this development also introduces challenges, such as the potential for misinformation and misinterpretation. The ease of producing and sharing content can sometimes distort meaning, leading to confusion or deliberate manipulation. At the heart of these changes lies the Internet, which serves as a powerful driver of global communication and development. It has facilitated unprecedented access to knowledge, fostered collaboration across diverse sectors, and accelerated economic growth. From education and commerce to governance and social interaction, the Internet continues to shape modern society, underscoring its role as a cornerstone of progress in the digital age. Despite progress, issues such as hacking tendencies, selective media credibility, and propaganda remain prevalent. Misinformation and disinformation practices have escalated, affecting public opinion and democratic processes. Rational choice theory and information integration theory suggest caution when engaging with modern tools of information. These considerations form the framework of this study.
