Experimental quantum key distribution with simulated ground-to-satellite photon losses and processing limitations

Significant challenges for secure data transmission at a global scale are addressed in an experiment that emulates quantum cryptography over satellite links. Feasible key-exchange rates are quantified in a realistic implementation which includes all steps of a decoy-based protocol.
