In his Nobel lecture in 1970, Axelrod explored the origins of his interests in, and the present state of scientific inquiry for, research of sympathetic amines, noradrenaline and neural uptake and regulation. Axelrod, Ulf von Euler and Sir Bernard Katz, were awarded the Nobel Prize for their "discoveries concerning the humoral transmitters in the nerve terminals and the mechanism for their storage, release and inactivation."
