The principle of Zero Trust — "never trust, always verify" — has evolved from a conceptual framework into a foundational pillar of modern cybersecurity strategy. This paper synthesizes current research to examine the modern trends shaping Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) adoption and implementation. We analyze the convergence of ZTA with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML), its application in cloud and Internet of Things (IoT) environments, the emergence of Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) and Secure Access Service Edge (SASE), and the challenges organizations face in practice. Drawing on recent academic surveys, systematic literature reviews, and empirical studies, we identify key research gaps and propose a forward-looking agenda for the field.
