Miguel de Unamuno and the United States: A Connection through Networks

Throughout his lifetime, Miguel de Unamuno received correspondence from 138 Americans. The letters reveal that many contacts were not mere direct, one-to-one interactions, but arose from pre-existing networks or gave rise to new ones. The circuits around Hispanism, the press and the publishing world were those most interested in establishing contact with Unamuno. Drawing on these letters, and through network analysis and visualization, this article seeks to offer a more complete picture of Unamuno’s relationship with the United States, while also exploring some of the interconnections that shaped the American intellectual landscape of the twentieth century.
