Self-assembly of two C60 hexakis-adducts, each bearing one di(4-pyridyl)methano addend, and two PtII centers afforded the dinuclear cyclophane 1, which represents the first example of a new class of supramolecular multifullerene arrays. The X-ray crystal structure of 1 revealed that the four vertex atoms of the cyclophane—the two PtII centers and the two quaternary C atoms of the dipyridylmethano groups—form a perfectly planar parallelogram at the cost of substantial angle strain.
