Key Points

  • The aim is to explore how conversational AI systems can unintentionally disrupt user flow and emotional states.
  • Scenario-based analysis of a real interaction with a conversational AI system.
  • Identification of psychological mechanisms related to flow disruption and emotional interference.
  • Demonstrated that contextual intrusion leads to increased cognitive load.
  • Observed significant loss of momentum in user interactions.
  • Identified emotional interference during reflective moments as a key negative outcome.

Abstract

This white paper documents a real interaction in which a conversational AI system reintroduced prior conversational content into a new, narrowly scoped prompt without request. Scenario-based analysis identifies the psychological mechanisms involved in contextual intrusion and flow disruption and accounts for the asymmetric human costs imposed by such behavior, including cognitive load, momentum loss, and emotional interference during reflective states.
