Key Points

  • To investigate bacterial contamination and pH levels in lens storage solutions and tears of soft contact lens wearers.
  • Monitored bacterial flora of tears among lens wearers.
  • Checked contamination levels in lens storage solutions.
  • Measured pH of tears and storage solutions.
  • Contamination occurred only when wearers did not follow lens care instructions.
  • Use of Flexsol and Normol was consistent among all wearers.

Abstract

ABSTRACT One hundred soft contact lens wearers were monitored for bacterial flora of tears, contamination of lens storage solutions, and pH of tears and lens storage solutions. All wearers used Flexsol as a lens cleaning and storage solution, and Normol as a lens rinsing solution. It was concluded that contamination of a wearer's storage solution occurred only if the wearer failed to follow instructions in the use of solutions in his daily lens care.
