Structured PICO

Does the type of atrial fibrillation (paroxysmal vs. persistent/permanent) affect the risk of heart failure hospitalization and stroke in patients with HFrEF?

P
Population
Patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) with a history of atrial fibrillation (AF)
I
Intervention
Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation or new onset atrial fibrillation
C
Comparator
Persistent or permanent atrial fibrillation
O
Outcome
Heart failure hospitalization and strokehard clinical

In patients with HFrEF, paroxysmal AF is associated with a higher risk of HF hospitalization and stroke compared to persistent or permanent AF, emphasizing the importance of anticoagulant therapy.

Abstract

Among HF patients with a history of AF, those with paroxysmal AF were at greater risk of HF hospitalization and stroke than were patients with persistent or permanent AF, underlining the importance of anticoagulant therapy. New onset AF was associated with increased risk of all outcomes.
