I AM deeply honored by the invitation to deliver the Shattuck Lecture for 1967 to the Annual Meeting of the Massachusetts Medical Society. I am mindful of the long list of distinguished physicians who have preceded me as the Shattuck Lecturer, and I devoutly hope that I may make a contribution that in a small way will be worthy of so illustrious a tradition. The chairman of the Committee on Publications, Dr. James M.
