Electrical excitation continues to be a useful technique in nerve physiology. A new concept, the damping factor, has been proposed to characterize the essential features of excitation processes. It appears to be correlated with several aspects of nerve function and particularly with the membrane potential. Therefore it possesses a functional significance and its practical expression leads to valuable experimental data.
