The coupling of acetoacetate with an excess of diazotized p-nitroaniline has been utilized by Walker (1954) to develop a sensitive colorimetric method for the estimation of acetoacetate. With defined conditions at pH 49-5*0, the reaction proceeds as in equation 1 (R=p-NO2.0CH4) with the formation of NN'-bis-(p-nitrophenyl)-C-acetylformazan.
