On Nov 29, 2024, the Australian federal government amended the Online Safety Act to ban children younger than 16 years from having social media accounts. 1 The amendment requires platforms to take reasonable steps to enforce the ban, with fines of up to AUD50 million for non-compliance. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated the ban aims to reduce social media harms for children and “give kids back their childhood and parents their peace of mind. ”2
