Abstract

This case study applies Coupling Geometry to the People’s Republic of China from the beginning of the reform era to the present, and it answers the question its predecessor left open. Case Study XV closed on an asymmetric configuration without precedent in the portfolio: an exhausted revolutionary system that had decoupled its economic sphere — coded C = 5.9 under the programme’s rubric — while holding political coupling near maximum, and whose long-run stability the programme declined to assert. The present study documents the answer the subsequent four decades supplied. The asymmetry was constructed deliberately: household decollectivisation, special economic zones as chosen apertures in a closed envelope — the structural inverse of the portfolio’s Tokugawa closure — and a dual-track order in which the party retained the political monopoly it enforced, at Tiananmen in June 1989, as the constitutional boundary of the experiment. The configuration then produced the largest poverty reduction in recorded history through the mechanism the framework’s redistribution theorem names: expansion-funded gains without distributional restructuring, underwritten by a transfer of productive capacity from the developed West that the coordinating ideology of free trade rendered invisible until its distributional losers withdrew compliance. And the configuration did not hold. From 2012 the political sphere recaptured the economic — the anti-corruption instrument, the removal of term limits, the platform crackdowns, the deliberate puncturing of the property-credit mechanism, the pandemic-era demonstration of algorithmic coordination and its abrupt rupture under acute shock in November 2022 — a recoupling that collapsed the domain asymmetry back into a single scalar and resolved the held-open question in the direction the framework’s ratchet expects: asymmetric configurations of this kind resolve by recapture, not by extension of the decoupling. The system’s 2025 state is coded in the programme’s pre-registration of April 2026, locked before outcomes and governing this study: C = 6.80 (I1 8.0, I2 6.5, I3 6.0, I4 8.5, I5 5.0), cascade-or-major-reorganisation predicted on a five-to-ten-year horizon, refractive-dominant mode, with interim markers at end-2026, 2028, 2031, and 2036, explicit counter-arguments, and explicit disconfirmation conditions. The study presents the locked test in full, logs the July 2026 marker-relevant observations without revising the locked scores, and states the theoretical contributions the case forces: the global potlatch as the redistribution theorem’s largest documented instance of ideological disguise; algorithmic coordination as a third coordination category with an asymmetric resilience profile; managed ideological transition as an attempted state construction of constitutive identity; and the one-child policy as the most consequential constraint-primacy intervention in the record.
