Abstract

Abstract Monoaldehydes, other than formaldehyde, do not increase the viscosity of gelatin. Dialdehydes can increase viscosities, the order of efficiency being. Glutaraldehyde increases the specific rotation of gelatin sols and gels but this effect usually requires a maturing time before it becomes apparent. After 18 h the increase is about 8%. Hence molecular order can adjust within gel structure. Cross‐linking gelatin does not improve the mechanical hardness of the film produced, as shown by indentation measurements. The specific rotation of gelatin film is about one‐third the value of gelatin in the sol state.
