HAUTE LUMIÈRE Nº 06 — The Paradigm Shift

Key Points

  • To challenge foundational economic doctrines of universal scarcity and mechanical market operation by proposing an ecological, relational model of economic exchange.
  • Synthesized 33 interdisciplinary historical and socio-economic sources to analyze resource management models.
  • Conducted qualitative case assessments of self-governing resource systems, including coastal fisheries, acequia irrigation networks, and renewable energy communities.
  • Demonstrates that supply and distribution networks exhibit structural behaviors analogous to biological mycorrhizal networks rather than deterministic machines.
  • Identifies sustained resource stability across decentralized, cooperative community structures that operate outside orthodox scarcity assumptions.

Abstract

HAUTE LUMIÈRE Nº 06 — The Paradigm Shift. Two chapters, one reversal. An editorial edition carrying two chapters of The Living Economy in a single arc. The first argues that economics rests on an assumption so deep it became invisible — scarcity as metaphysical foundation rather than as a relationship — and honours what that assumption got right before turning it. The second argues that the dominant metaphor for a market is the machine, and that supply chains behave far more like mycorrhizal networks than like mechanisms. Along the way: the communities that were never supposed to work and did, from Maine's lobster gangs to New Mexico's acequias; the Danish island that produced too much energy; the orchard of Renata Vasquez, where the wells held steady while the neighbours drilled ever deeper; six terms the machine metaphor has no room for; and the question the issue leaves the reader holding — where in your life is the scarcity real, and where is it only the water you were taught to swim in? Thirty-three sources, in the order the argument needed them, nothing trimmed to fit the layout. Deposited as a paginated, text-searchable PDF and the self-contained HTML edition with all seven registers from Daylight to Nocturne. Set in Cormorant Garamond and Manrope.
