Abstract

IN 1956 Bishop, Estes and Mclntosh¶ reported the value of electrocardiographic monitoring during pericardial aspiration. They pointed out that the needle used during pericardial aspiration could act as an exploring electrode when connected to the V lead of the electrocardiogram by two alligator clamps and a section of wire. They also showed that when the needle electrode comes in contact with the ventricular epicardium giant ST-segment displacement is recorded but that no electrocardiographic changes are recorded by extremity or precordial leads taken simultaneously.The apparatus and technic described by Bishop, Estes and McIntosh has been quite valuable.
