The article focuses on the study of the phenomenon of identity from the standpoint of philosophical knowledge by a well-known foreign thinker David Hum. This approach allowed to understand self-identity in the line of classical philosophy and contemporary philosophical thought, in particular – in the context of explaining freedom of will. The problem of the phenomenon of identity within the article is analyzed from the standpoint of interconnection with the philosophical categories “consciousness” and “responsibility”. Hume offers a completely new understanding of the phenomenon of necessity, so it is worth considering the advantages and disadvantages of Hume’s concept of free will in the aggregate of the above arguments. To begin with, the philosopher simultaneously recognizes the existence of some metaphysical causes or forces that can force a person to take certain actions. The position of D. Hume was studied, based on the basis of the concept of continuity of personal perception and is related to the formation of liberally individualistic moods in the philosophical field. It has been found that the concept of D. Hume’s freedom is characterized by a number of problematic aspects, such as the need to refuse to think outside the usual ideas, which is part of the human project of true metaphysics. Hume works with the perceptions that he distinguishes with impressions and ideas; They provide material that, together with associative principles, such as similarity, adjacentity and causality, form the human mind. The main goal was to protect freedom in terms of freedom of spontaneity, so the philosopher criticized another form of freedom, such as freedom of indifference. The main problem in the interpretation of freedom of will of Hume is seen in the wrong use and metaphysical confusion of concepts of causality and necessity. The main contribution of D.Hume is seen in the formation of classical compatbilism and the main arguments in defense of this concept.
