Aim. The purpose of the article is to develop principles for the scientific description of translation patterns depending on the typological differences between the English and Russian languages. Methodology. The presentation of the material in the most famous works on the translation theory in the English-Russian pair is analyzed, the nature of these works is determined as didactic. By comparing the structure and content of such publications, gaps and problems in the theoretical understanding of the translation theory are revealed. Results. Four principles of presentation of the concept of translation are proposed and substantiated, which integrate approaches within the framework of linguistic, interpretive and communicative-functional paradigms of translation studies. Research implications. The methodological foundations of the translation theory are put forward and an approach to understanding translation issues in one language pair is structured, which can subsequently be extended to other pairs of languages
