Nkwa Umuagbogho musical tradition, like many other musical traditions in Nigeria has gone through various degrees of modifications, courtesy of contemporary age. Nkwa Umuagbogho is a popular dance that originated from Afikpo in Ebonyi State, Nigeria. It is one of those traditional dances that has gained recognition both internationally and locally for its uniqueness in rhythm and beauty in performance. Using ethnographic method of research, it has been observed that presently, the dance has experienced a great level of modification in both the dance and instrumentation. Are these changes representing the image of Nkwa Umuagbogho positively or negatively in today’s contemporary Nigeria? This research therefore, itemizes the changes / modification that Nkwa Umuagbogho has experienced, particularly, from an aesthetic point of view in contemporary Nigeria.
