This paper presents a comprehensive study of valve impact induced noise and vibration, a primary noise generation mechanism in rotary compressors. The research combines numerical modeling and experimental validation to develop a complete understanding of the noise generation process. A coupled modeling approach is developed that integrates valve dynamics and compressor thermodynamics to predict characteristics of valve impact indued noise and vibration for rotary compressors. The experimental validation is performed based on specially designed test platforms with laser vibrometry measurement of valve’s dynamic responses. The simulated valve dynamic characteristics are validated against free vibration measurement result and good agreement is demonstrated. This work provides valuable insights for compressor manufacturers to improve both NVH through better understanding of noise generation mechanisms.
