Purpose This study aims to understand the natural design principles of prismatic structures, and thus, it can provide new insights into developing high-performance bioinspired materials. Design/methodology/approach This paper reviews the microstructure–property relationship and bionic applications of prismatic structures found in mollusk shells, summarizing related research conducted over several years. Findings The prismatic structure, as the outermost mineral layer of shells, has the most prominent wear resistance in its mechanical properties. Therefore, researchers have conducted extensive biomimetic studies, especially for the protective outer layer or films. Originality/value The review is supported by an extensive list of high-quality references and figures. By integrating our own research findings with those from other studies, we offer a balanced and critical evaluation of the current state of knowledge in this field. The manuscript is original and unpublished and is not being considered for publication elsewhere.
