Abstract In 1935 Region 5 of the Forest Service began the preparation of a recreational management plan. In the following paper the authors describe the various steps involved and methods used in making such a plan. Although forest areas have long been used for recreational purposes, the technique of recreational surveying is a recent development to which the Forest Service has made a significant contribution.
