Significance Tunisia is an important partner for the EU and particularly Italy on migration and security issues. Recent developments beg the question whether Saied seeks to supplement his range of diplomatic partners, or to substitute Western states for non-Western ones. Impacts Tunisia’s foreign policy, including its choice of partners, overlaps with that of Algeria; their bilateral relationship will strengthen. Relations with China, Russia and Iran allow Tunisia to look beyond Washington’s focus on counterterrorism and Europe’s on migration. The next forum on China-Africa Cooperation in September will be another opportunity to develop Tunisian-Chinese ties. Arrests and intimidation of critics will increase ahead of the October 6 presidential elections.
