본 연구는 한국어와 중국어 이중언어 사용자의 영어 관사 습득 양상을 탐구한다. 특히, 정관사 "the", 부정관사 "a/an", 그리고 관사가 없는 경우의 문맥에서 온라인 및 오프라인 실험을 통해, 단어별 자기조절 읽기 실험과 수용성 판단 실험을 통해 이들 이중언어 사용자들의 영어 관사 사용 실태를 조사하였다. 본 연구의 주요 목표는 첫째, 이들 이중언어 사용자의 영어 관사 사용 능숙도가 한국어 모국어화자 대조군보다 우수한지 확인하는 것이었다. 둘째, 이들 이중화자의 제2언어인 중국어가 제3언어인 영어 습득에 미치는 잠재적인 영향을 조사하는 것이었다. 연구 결과는 이들 이중언어 사용자들이 동일한 영어 능력 수준의 한국인 학생들보다 영어 관사 사용에서 보다 높은 성취도를 보여주었다. 이 결과는 제2언어의 중국어 능력이 제3언어인 영어 습득에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 것을 의미한다. 본 연구는 한국어를 제1언어로 사용하는 한국어-중국어 이중언어 사용자들이 영어를 제3언어로 습득할 때 중국어 제2언어의 긍정적 전이 효과가 일어날 수 있다는 구체적인 증거를 제공한다. This study examines the usage of English articles by Korean-Chinese bilinguals, focusing specifically on the usage of definite article the and indefinite articles a/an, and the absence of an article. Through a combination of online and offline experiments, including word-by-word self-paced reading and acceptability rating tasks, we examined Korean-Chinese bilinguals" nuanced application of English articles in both non-specific and specific contexts. The primary objectives of this study were twofold: first, to ascertain whether the English article usage proficiency of Korean-Chinese bilinguals surpasses that of their monolingual Korean counterparts, and second, to investigate potential influences from their acquisition of Chinese as a second language (L2), alongside their native Korean, on their English learning trajectory. Our findings reveal that Korean-Chinese bilinguals demonstrate a higher degree of precision in English article usage compared to Korean students at a similar intermediate English proficiency level. This outcome suggests a discernible influence from their acquisition of Chinese as an L2, implying that proficiency in L2 may positively impact the acquisition of a third language (L3), in this case, English. This study provides substantive evidence supporting the hypothesis that Korean-Chinese bilinguals, whose primary language is Korean, may experience beneficial transfer effects from their competence in Chinese when acquiring English as an L3.
