William Faulkner, the Nobel Prize winner for literature in 1950, is a prominent American writer. A Rose for Emily is one of his most famous short story presenting the change of southern society after the American Civil War. The color symbol is deemed as an indispensable artistic feature in A Rose for Emily. It plays an irreplaceable role in exploring into Emily's character, depicting the environment and highlighting the subject. This thesis deals with "symbols" and "color symbols" in literature and systematical interpretation of color symbols which embody the contrast between past glories and current decay of southern society, Emily's change and also racial issues.
