Abstract Visualizing three-dimensional volumetric data sets, often referred to as volume visualization, has been an essential topic in scientific visualization. Volume visualization is concerned with visualizing scalar field data (e.g., temperature, pressure, intensity). Existing software tools can perform interactive visualization of volumetric data sets. However, these tools are often sophisticated and mainly geared towards researchers and developers. In this paper, we present VolumeVisual, a web-based educational software tool for teaching and learning volume visualization. VolumeVisual integrates the two most popular volume visualization techniques, direct volume rendering and isosurface rendering, to give students a comprehensive understanding of basic concepts and algorithms. The software tool includes a study component and a quiz component. Effectiveness of VolumeVisual is evaluated by conducting a formal user study consisting of an introduction and training session, a survey, followed by a quiz.
