Abstract In a one-location test, gross volume growth for 5 years (final volume plus mortality minus initial volume) was increased 33 percent by fertilization with urea at 240 kg N/ha (200 lbs N/acre). Volume growth was not significantly different between saw thinning and chemical thinning with organic arsenicals. Volume growth response to fertilizer was higher on chemically thinned plots but interaction between fertilization and thinning method was not significant. Some mortality and needle injury to residual trees occurred on chemically thinned plots but these effects were minor since mortality averaged 1.7 percent and injury subsided. Forest Sci. 21:418-420.
