Evidence emerging from across the country suggests that sudden unexpected deaths are increasing in Nigeria, frequently taking place outside hospitals and largely resulting from cardiac events. Key drivers include prevalent, poorly controlled hypertension; urban dietary and activity shifts fuelling obesity and diabetes; limited access to continuous primary care; and the cardiovascular impact of acute psychological stress. Many victims show preceding symptoms (chest pain, syncope, severe breathlessness, palpitations) that require urgent assessment (blood pressure, pulse, ECG). Prevention demands routine screening, strengthened primary-care continuity, public CPR/AED programmes, healthier lifestyles and policy measures to increase screening access, reduce medication costs and equip public spaces for resuscitation. 1.
