Leading Through Growth, Not Perfection

Abstract The author, an undergraduate student at the University of Pittsburgh majoring in Computational Biology, relates her leadership journey. It began with gradually becoming comfortable in her first time speaking to a crowd, to volunteering at a government school in Tamil Nadu, India a year later, and joining “the Pittsburgh Policy Initiative (PPI), a student‐led organization focused on policy‐based civic engagement.” She notes that “the same lessons that shaped me in the classroom in Tamil Nadu now guide me in policy meetings: listening first, translating perspectives, and building common language across differences.” Her most recent work is with the “Pitt Civic Collective (PCC). This initiative unites civic‐minded organizations across Pitt's campus to collaborate and amplify their collective impact.” Leadership, she contends, is a “practice of showing up, listening deeply and being willing to grow together–knowing that each step can light the way for someone else to join in making a difference.”
