Using Nishi-Chiba Gakuen-dori in Chiba City as a case study, this paper reports on the development and utilization of a sidewalk resting device, the “Machi-isu,” which makes use of fences surrounding roadside trees. During the development process, communication with local residents played an important role in fostering understanding of the device. Furthermore, even in areas with limited walking width, the installation of the “Machi-isu” enabled people to stop and rest without causing significant obstruction to pedestrian flow.
