This preprint introduces a constraint-based structural framework for modeling retrieval systems in hybrid search architectures. Retrieval is formalized as operating strictly over an indexed subset of the document universe, where index construction acts as a structural boundary condition for downstream ranking mechanisms. The paper provides a theoretical formulation of index-constrained retrieval and discusses implications for hybrid lexical-dense architectures.
