Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors have become a key focus across industries, yet universities primarily engage with ESG as an academic discipline rather than as a measurable institutional practice. However, reporting on ESG is essential for higher education institutions (HEI) to demonstrate accountability, promote transparency, and align with global sustainability goals. This paper explores how universities can integrate digital technologies to enhance ESG reporting, tracking, and implementation. By analysing global and South African universities, the study examines current ESG reporting trends, the role of digital tools in ESG management, and the transformative potential of Industry 4.0 technologies. The paper proposes a technology-enabled framework for standardizing ESG reporting in HEIs, arguing that universities must not only teach ESG principles but also actively implement and report on them to align with global sustainability standards.
