A watching brief was undertaken by Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology (ORCA) during street lighting refurbishment works at Cromwell Road, Kirkwall. Following consultation with the Local Authority Archaeologist and in line with best practice, all ground breaking works associated with the project were monitored. The programme has shown that there was no material of archaeological significance present in those areas affected by the current scheme of works, with the possible exception of one deposit which may be a former ground surface or buried soil. However, as only a very small part of this deposit was exposed, no firm conclusions could be drawn about its character. It is recommended that no further work on Site is necessary as part of the current scheme.
