Surface modification of SUS316L was investigated using a reverse-rotation burnishing process with a ball end mill assisted by ultrasonic vibration. During the variation of machining conditions, periodic surface structures were observed. In this study, the mechanism of their formation is discussed. A formulation was proposed based on the effective cutting edge length acting on the workpiece, feed rate, spindle speed, non-machining time, and step feed. Furthermore, the influence of ultrasonic assistance on the generation of micro-scale periodic structures was also examined.
