ABSTRACT The distribution of the sum of Beaulieu–Xie random variables is critical for analysing the performance of diversity techniques, such as equal‐gain combining (EGC), in communication environments characterised by multiple line‐of‐sight and non‐line‐of‐sight components, where fading can be modelled using the Beaulieu–Xie distribution. In this study, we derive an accurate closed‐form approximation for the cumulative distribution and probability density functions of the sum of an arbitrary number of Beaulieu–Xie random variables. This approximation can be used in characterizing diversity channels. Ultimately, we leverage our approximation to analyse the symbol error rate of an EGC diversity system and validate the accuracy by comparing the results to Monte Carlo simulations. Excellent agreement is seen in the comparison.
