Excavations at sites at West End, Warfield revealed a modest number of archaeological features belonging to the Early Roman and medieval periods. The presence of an Early Roman site was unexpected but adds to the recurrent presence of Early Roman settlement across the claylands of East Berkshire, many of which notably do not continue into later Roman times. The medieval activity is predominantly in the form of an enclosure and paddocks which is considered to reflect activity or processing areas for properties fronting West End Lane.
