The portraiture in the period of Antiquity and Late Antiquity in the Central Balkans provinces bears all the traits similar to those in other Roman provinces, yet is distinctive because of the influence of the local, indigenous cultures. The development and main characteristics of portraits and portrait statuary can be observed and followed through the centuries in cult, imperial, honorific statues, and portraits of ordinary citizens. The portraiture in Central Balkans Roman provinces followed the artistic trends from Rome and other major centers, but mainly copied the Hellenistic and Classicistic originals. The diapason of the themes was also very rich, following the popular subjects of the period in question. The Roman portraiture in Central Balkans ceases to exist by the middle of the 4th century.
