Precursors for the preparation of carbon nitride were selected from a number of relatively high nitrogen content organic materials. The precursors were pyrolyzed in a closed system at 700°C under 225 MPa. The resulting residues showed little nitrogen loss, but were amorphous with relatively low densities. Raman spectroscopy and 13 C NMR indicate the presence of trigonal carbon.
