After an explanatory context setting the work of the School Development Program in the Yale Child Study Center is described. The key task of the Center is to redress the imbalance in student performance and social and psychological development in urban schools. The program's use of the principles of child development in collaboration with schools is described and illustrated by reference to several school districts. In all this work the crucial contribution of effective teacher preparation is stressed.
